Central London Huma nists (CLH) are pleased to welcome Humanists UK\, LGBT Humanists\, Faith t o Faithless and other local LGBTQ+ Rights organisations and charities to a Pride Month Panel on LGBTQ+ Equality and why must we ban conversion thera py for all.
\nConversion therapy refers to practices intended to for cibly change an LGBTQ+ person’s sexual orientation\, gender identity or ge nder expression. This so-called ‘therapy’ or ‘cure’ involves abusive and v iolent practices experienced by LGBTQ+ people when others try to change\, alter or suppress their identity.
\nIn early 2022\, the UK governmen t announced that it will ban these practices for gay or bisexual people in England and Wales but not for transgender people. We believe that these a busive practices must be banned for all.
\n===================
\nPlease arrive before the talk to enjoy refreshments from our charity wi ne bar and mingle. All profits from the snack bar will be donated to a Ban Conversion Therapy Campaign.
\nOur speaker events are free\, but we kindly ask for a £3 contribution per head. This helps towards the hire of the venue and equipment.
\nEvents are advertised on multiple online portals and through email\, so RSVP numbers on any one portal may not be fully indicative of the greater attendance on the day.
\nOur events are 18+ unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. We encourage dialogue\ , debate\, and sharing of information\, but ask people to keep their comme nts cordial. Any individual’s views expressed here do not necessarily refl ect the views of the group at large.

Tackling the human health conseque nces of diseases that originate in animals is not a new problem. Long befo re the global COVID-19 crisis\, efforts were being made globally to fight zoonotic diseases. One of the oldest known zoonoses is rabies\, which has a uniquely high mortality rate killing over 60\,000 people every year. Alt hough also caused by a virus\, there are important differences between rab ies and COVID-19: we know that dogs are the primary source of human rabies and therefore mass dog vaccination will eventually stop human cases. It s hould therefore be possible to eliminate dog mediated rabies\, and there i s a global effort to do so by 2030\, supported by WHO\, FAO and OIE. Howev er\, mass dog vaccination isn’t always affordable or sustainable for regio ns where resources are limited.
\nRabies is an entirely preventable disease via the timely administration of post exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Although PEP is effective\, it is expensive\, in short supply\, and doesn’ t address the long-term maintenance of the disease in the dogs. Known as a disease of poverty\, rabies affects low-income regions\, further perpetua ting the disparities in health care access.
\nProgress towards contr ol is challenging due to\, for example the lack of data available on dog d emographics\, lack of awareness to the risk\, vaccine hesitancy\, poor res ource allocation and lack of consistent surveillance.
\nTo help us p redict and safeguard against outbreaks\, and to measure the success of dif ferent interventions\, simulation models can be used. These models assess different control strategies and inform decision makers on best practice i f an outbreak was to occur\, to improve preparedness and reduce the risk o f disease spread.
\nEmma will be discussing how researchers at the U niversity of Surrey are working in collaboration with Centre for Disease C ontrol and Prevention (CDC)\, and Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC ) to develop new infectious disease simulations\, to help end rabies now!< /p>\n
Emma Taylor was awarded her Doctorate in Veterinary Epidemiology a nd Global Health from the University of Surrey\, School of Veterinary Medi cine in 2022. Emma has worked in collaboration with Centre for Disease Con trol\, Atlanta (CDC)\, and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) a nd uses mathematical modelling to simulate the transmission of dog rabies\ , and the economic impact of disease interventions. Her research also expl ores the factors which dictate health seeking behaviours\, which may lead to vaccine hesitancy of those individuals potentially exposed to rabies vi rus. Emma is particularly interested in how poverty can act as a driver to facilitate disease prevalence\, and poor access to health care.
\nE mma has worked in many rabies endemic countries supporting regional diseas e surveillance programmes and has published her research in a variety of h igh impact scientific journals. Emma is also a member of London Centre for Neglected Tropical Disease Research\, a group of experts delivering cross cutting approaches to the control and elimination of neglected tropical d iseases.

\nCommunities of trust\, expert knowledge\, reli ability of evidence\, and competing rationalities have become central issu es in public health responses to the global pandemic. These discussions have had si gnificant impacts upon individuals’ health\, as well as affecting national and international policies related to COVID-19.
\nIn response\, this conference will explore a plurality of contempora ry global framings that relate to beliefs about health and healing\, parti cularly those pertaining to religious worldviews. It will explore how vari ous competing and marginalised understandings are drawn upon by individual s and groups when making choices about health and wellbeing. \nEndometriosis is a common yet poorly understoo d condition. Media and academic discourse often highlight failures in diag nosis as emblematic of gender biases in health. This conference focuses on practices of exclusion in past and present approaches to endometriosis as well as potential inclusive futures.
\nIt is the first academic conference to bring together UK and internationally ba sed endometriosis social science and humanities researchers alongside\, an d in conversation with\, prominent (bio)medical researchers\, third sector representatives and independent researchers and authors.
\nThe way endometriosis is categorised is central to how it i s understood and experienced. Speakers will discuss the historical legacie s of endometriosis as a ‘wandering womb’ induced ‘hysteria’ and ‘career wo men’s disease’. They will consider intersecting systems of power and the m arginalisation of gendered\, racialised\, and disabled bodies. \nWhat’s better than watching a scary movie around Halloween? Well\, hearing a lecture o n the real-life psychological disorders behind movie monsters in a nice pu b\, of course. Clinical psychology has a lot to teach us about horror – an d horror movies can reveal much more than we realize about psychological d istress as well as some of the fundamental fears that go along with being human. Some of this material will be surprising. Though film fans may be w ell acquainted with vampires\, werewolves\, zombies\, and the human replac ements from Invasion of the Body Snatchers\, even many medical pr ofessions may not know about the corresponding conditions of Renfield’s sy ndrome\, clinical lycanthropy\, Cotard’s syndrome\, and the many misidenti fication delusions. The “real” folklore behind some of these scary creatur es may be surprising as well.
\nThis talk will discuss what clinical psychology and psychiatry have to say about a sampling of movie monsters from the Golden Age of cinema\, more modern monsters\, and even some “mons trous” behaviors (e.g.\, cannibalism). Attendees will not only learn state -of-the-art psychological science but also gain a better understanding of history\, folklore\, and how Hollywood often—but not always—gets it wrong when tackling these complex topics.

He received his PhD in clinical psychology and MA in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University and completed post-do ctoral fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThere is something about invisible forces that can explain the whole world in such a way that it feels like a revelation to those of us who com e to believe in such causal entities. From 1991 to 2006 I believed that th ere was a certain type of trauma that was invisible\, and yet explains alm ost everything in psychopathology. That type of trauma is called repressed trauma. I came to fully understand the pseudoscientific set of beliefs in repression theory in about 2007\, which I will explain in my talk. During that time\, I also came to believe in invisible forms of oppression\, too \, sometimes from the very same books that taught me about repressed traum a. By 2006\, I began to very gradually let go of my ideas of invisible opp ression\, but did not really understand the framework of beliefs in the va rious invisible-oppression theories until about 2019\, when I was able to describe and name them as an odd mix of postmodernism and a diaspora of cr itical theories. Both invisible repression and invisible oppression theori es are in the realm of being unfalsifiable\, are both likely derived from philosophical idealism\, are divisive\, have the potential for authoritari anism and censorship\, and are potentially destructive of merit\, history\ , science\, and education.
\nToday we see a split between those want ing to use scientific empirical liberalism to assess claims of trauma and oppression\, and those who insist we must use a critical social justice fr amework instead in which most claims are both applauded and accepted as tr ue. These approaches clash in their approach to race\, sex\, gender\, disa bility\, climate change\, and any other number of applications. I firmly c ome down on the side of falsifiable scientific liberalism\, while being to lerant of religious choices of others to believe in the critical social ju stice framework and invisible forces of oppression (or repression) should they wish to. In this talk\, I will take you through my flawed journey and also explain the religious substructure framework of these two belief sys tems (i.e.\, invisible repression and oppression belief systems).

\nIn a time of misinformation\, purc hasable blue ticks\, and spurious claims to be ‘following the science’\, h ow do we ask the right questions of information we find from social media\ , companies\, and politicians? 66% of people think it’s important the gove rnment shows the public all the evidence used to make policy decisions. An d yet\, the sources of data used in policy making become more complex\, mo delling and big data being two key examples. But you don’t need to be an e xpert to ask the right questions. This talk will cover how to ask about th e data behind the issues that matter to you\, be that climate change or lo cal healthcare policies. With examples of how people asking for evidence h ave made a real difference\, we’ll show you how you can too\, and why this is more important than ever in the lead up to a general election next yea r.
