Central London Humanists (CLH) are pleased to welcome Dr John Adenitire as he explains how liberal assumptions in our current lega l definitions of religion portray religion as a belief system which deals with existential matters and how\, once we move to places where those assu mptions are not held\, we see that definitions of religion also change. Th e event will take place at the Conway Hall on May 18\, 2022\, from 7 pm to 9 pm.
\n\n
US\, Canadian\, and UK judges define religion for lega l purposes primarily as a belief-system which deals with existential conce rns. Dr. Adenitire shows why these judges have adopted this view. He argue s that their definitions of religion reflect the assumptions of a liberal political order. The definitions affirm those jurisdictions’ commitment to a polity which is justifiable to the individual\, rather than to a deity. And they affirm the commitment to a polity where ideological pluralism is promoted given that the state is barred from enforcing a particular theol ogical view.
\n\n
This liberal character of religion is conti ngent both in terms of time and space. He shows this contingency by referr ing to three different conceptions of religion across time and space. He f irst analyses Thomas Aquinas’s understanding of religion as virtue and sho ws that this conception was animated by his theological politics\; a form of politics that enforces worship of a particular deity.
\n\n
He then moves on to analyse a conception which he labels religion as cons cience held by Roger Williams\, the founder of Rhode Island and an early a dvocate of a constitutional right to religious freedom. This conception wa s born out of opposition to theological politics and out of a commitment t o the ideology of liberalism.
\n\n
Finally\, he looks to the contemporary understanding of religion as fixed identity in certain Islami c states\, with particular reference to Iran’s and Egypt’s theocratic cons titutional traditions. Contemporary definitions of religion in the US\, Ca nada\, and UK owe much to religion as conscience\, in particular\, they co ntinue and extend a commitment to liberal principles.
\n\n
Dr John Adenitire is a Strategic Lecturer in the School of Law and a Fellow of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prior to joining Queen Mary\, he was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Birmingham. He compl eted his PhD at the University of Cambridge\, Faculty of Law and Fitzwilli am College. He is the author of A General Right to Conscientious Exemption : Beyond Religious Privilege (Cambridge University Press 2020).

\n\n
From one poin t of view philosophy is centred on the human challenge of the choice of li fe: put simply\, what are we to do?
\nPlato asks his reader s to look at that question in the widest possible frame\, and the deepest possible depth. The Republic is an examination run in parallel: h ow an individual should arrange him or herself\, and to what end\; and how should a society arrange itself and to what end? After ten books of searc hing for goodness and justice\, Plato choses to close his dialogue with a myth in which souls are depicted choosing an entire life before the throne of Necessity and her daughters\, the Fates.
\nThis evening having b riefly explored the structure and fundamental questions posed in the R epublic\, we will focus on that myth in an attempt to clarify our und erstanding of our relation to the great cosmic order\, our own interior or der\, and the extent and limitations of human choice.
\nThe Trust ha s run these evenings since 2014 but this is the first we have planned sinc e the winter of 2020: we will resume our usual approach – a short talk of around 15 minutes\, and then a discussion between those attending guided b y some extracts from a Platonic text (in this case\, passages from the Republic’s closing myth). The evening will be presented by Tim Addey .
\nAll are welcome – entrance is free\, although donations are welc ome.

\nPlato’s Timaeus i> claims that the world is a single living creature animated by a ‘world soul’ – it\, and everything in it\, is therefore alive and intelligent. Wh at does he mean by this? At the very least we are being challenged to radi cally revise our understanding of what it means to share in intelligence\, to drop our assumption that intelligence is defined by the human version of it\, and to reconsider our relationship to the universe and it various elements. Perhaps the most pressing problems of the modern day can be reso lved by revisiting the ancient vision of psyche as contemplated by the Pla tonists.
\nA gentle exploration of the world as ensouled. No pr evious formal experience of philosophy necessary. All welcome – free entr y\, but donations gladly accepted!

\n
b>
\n
In the second century AD\, Apuleius\, a Platonic p hilosopher\, retold the myth of Cupid and Psyche in the course of his nove l\, ‘The Golden Ass.’ We will read passages from the myth\, and explore th e clear parallels between the trials of Psyche as she loses and regains he r union with Cupid (or Eros)\, and our own experience of descent and ascen t as souls “exiled from the orb of light†as understood by the Platoni c tradition.
\nWe’re taking two sessions to explore the delightful s
tory and its insights – in the first (27th Feb) we’ll look at the double d
escent of Psyche at the end of which she is left to wander across the mate
rial world in search of her divine lover. In this session (the second one)
we’ll summarize the first session before we begin\, so those who missed i
t can pick up the threads of the story. This second half concerns Psyche’s
re-ascent and her trials and initiations which lead to the reunion with h
er lover and the birth of the child “Delight”.
\n
Delivered by the most outstandi ng academics in the UK and beyond\, the British Academy’s flagship Lecture Programme show cases the very best scholarship in the humanities and social sciences.
\nIn 1649\, the English civil war result ed in the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell and the execution of King Charles I. In the same year\, the first English translat ion of the Quran was published in London. For some royalists\, these two e vents were linked: they both signified the ‘moral demise’ of the kingdom\, and indeed some polemicists depicted Cromwell as a “new Mahomet” (Muhamma d) seeking to gain power by attacking the moral and religious foundations of the nation.
\nIn this lecture\, Professor John Tolan will discuss how English authors such as Henry Stubbe\, John To land and George Sale embraced this comparison\, presenting the Muslim prop het as a reformer who preached pure monotheism and who abolished the power s of a corrupt clergy.
\nProfessor Tolan will expand on how this comparison was used to argue for the curtailing of the power of the Anglican Church\; with 18th-century French authors similarly lionising the prophet as a polemical tool against the Catholic church.
\nThe lecture will conclude by arguing that Muh ammad – seen as an imposter or a reformer – was at the centre of European debates on the proper relations between Church\, Crown and people.
\nSpeaker: Professor John Tolan\, Professor o f History at the University of Nantes.
\nJohn Tolan works on the history of religious and cultural relations between Je ws\, Christians and Muslims. He has studied and taught in universities in North America\, Europe\, Africa and the Middle East\; he is currently Prof essor of History at the University of Nantes and member of the Academia Eu ropæa. He has received numerous prizes and distinctions\, including two ma jor grants from the European Research Council and the Prix Diane Potier-Bo ès from the Académie Française (2008). He is author of numerous articles a nd books\, including Saracens: Islam in the Medieval European Imaginati on (2002)\, Sons of Ishmael (2008)\, Saint Francis and the S ultan (2009)\, Faces of Muhammad: Western Perceptions of the Prophe t of Islam from the Middle Ages to Today (2019)\, and England’s Jew s: Finance\, Violence\, and the Crown in the Thirteenth Century (2023) .
