The incidence of chronic disease has been increasingly rapidly. As a result, reducing the incidence and severity of chronic diseases has become a major public health and economic imperative. The onset and management of chronic diseases are often related to or driven by suboptimal behaviours, including inactivity, poor diet, low uptake of screening and other preventive services, and poor medication adherence. Behavioural economics, which integrates economics and psychology to study and influence the way people make choices, has emerged as a promising tool to address these suboptimal behaviours. This presentation will present the key insights from behavioural economics as they relate to chronic disease prevention and treatment, including the theoretical motivation for select interventions and results from a comprehensive literature review. Dr Finkelstein will then present results from his own trials in Singapore and recommendations for future research efforts.
