In her Judicial Institute Annual Lecture Lady Carr CJ uses the occasion of UCL's 200th anniversary not simply to look backwards at past achievements or forwards to future possibilities, but to explore the dynamic relationship between our legal past, present, and future. Rather than commemorating historical milestones or speculating about what lies ahead, the lecture reflects on how anniversaries involve continual reinterpretation of the past, shaped by present perspectives and concerns. Drawing on George Orwell's insight into the power of controlling historical meaning, the lecture considers how the understanding of the past is neither fixed nor neutral, and how this ongoing reinterpretation influences how institutions, ideas, and values develop over time.
