About this talk

A talk for all the family. Art historian and bestselling author Katy Hessel joins us to explore the untold stories of art history. Drawing on her internationally acclaimed book, The Story of Art without Men, now also available as an illustrated guide to amazing women artists for younger readers, Hessel will take us on a journey through the lives of artists who have gone uncelebrated for far too long. From the Renaissance to the Second World War, and across the globe from Manhattan, to Japan, discover the lives of extraordinary artists, freedom fighters and trailblazers, and the powerful artworks they created. You'll hear an interactive presentation from Hessel suitable for all ages, followed by a discussion with the V&A's Director of Learning and National Programmes, Dr Helen Charman, that will consider how advocacy and education can reshape art history. We'd like to extend an especially warm welcome to families – we'll provide sketching materials for younger visitors to draw and respond creatively during the talk. The talk will be followed by a book signing. The Story of Art without Men: An illustrated guide to amazing women artists and The Story of Art without Men will be for sale in the RA Shop.
