About this talk
So much of the recent focus of artificial intelligence (AI) has been on the quest to use massive data to build a single autonomous machine or agent that mimics and augments the human mind. And we only tend to think about AI on that one level – AI as single machine or agent. In this public lecture, University of California, Berkeley Distinguished Professor Emeritus Michael I. Jordan argues for the value of considering AI on two levels simultaneously: not just as the single machine or agent; but also the 'collective' - the network of people, machines, institutions, markets, incentives, and interactions in which the machine or agent operates. Join us as we explore how the social and cultural nature of human intelligence points to a need for AI research to integrate computational and inferential ideas with economic and social concepts. After the event there will be a drinks reception in the Staff Common Room which all are welcome to attend.
