About this talk

Please note: Booking is Essential Dr Nicolas Barbon is famed as the creator of fire insurance. He established the first fire insurance company in 1680, and he has been portrayed as a mean wheeler-dealer who borrowed vast sums of money, became an MP to avoid paying it back, and died in debt. Howard Benge, Director of the Insurance Museum, however, tells a different story about this perception we have of him. He will explain more in this talk, which is part of the exhibition “After the Fire: insurance, finance and a rebuilt City”. In-person: For access to the event, please use the Aldermanbury entrance to Guildhall Library/The London Centre. Online via YouTube: Event link to be sent to attendees 24 hours prior to the talk.
