About this talk

In Twelve Days That Shook the Middle East , scholar and Al Jazeera senior political analyst Marwan Bishara offers a clear-eyed account of what happened after October 7, 2023, why it happened, and why it matters. Dr Bishara argues that this conflict has always been an asymmetric, anticolonial struggle. The genocide was not a misstep; it was a blueprint unfolding before the world’s eyes. He will reflect on why he wrote the book and the challenge of writing a book about a war while it was still raging, and of drawing dramatic and controversial conclusions from its first dozen days, when the fighting had only just begun. He will discuss what shocked him the most; why he hoped that his thesis would prove wrong; why he now believes the book’s title needs updating; and what sets his book apart from the many others covering the Gaza war. Dr Bishara will also discuss his experience as a journalist covering a war in which many of his colleagues and fellow Palestinian journalists have been killed.
