About this talk
Anne Lyles honours the English artist on the 250th anniversary of his birth. Hear a world-leading scholar of John Constable RA, Anne Lyles, reflect on the artist's life during this special talk for Friends and members. Drawing on our collection of Constable paintings, sketches, drawings and items from his studio, Anne will discuss the artist's methods, obsessions and his commitment to the great outdoors, which made him an eternally indispensable painter of English landscapes, even as Constable's devotion to the Royal Academy put him at odds with its mission to elevate history painting above all. Constable's works, studies and personal belongings are on display in the Sculpture Court of the Royal Academy.
