On the eve of his death, Jesus commanded us to share bread and wine in remembrance of him and for many of us, the Eucharist lies at the heart of our worshipping life.  James Milne says it is a place where the past, present and the future collide, heaven and earth meet, and our lives are transformed.  But do we really experience it like that?

In this afternoon, we will explore the meaning of the Eucharist, and because this is not only a cerebral matter but a physical encounter in which all our senses are engaged, we will uncover the sacrament’s rich layers of meaning through six objects, from the everyday to precious works of art.

This afternoon is for anyone who is curious to find out about this core activity of the church’s life, as well as for those wanting to deepen understanding of their own worshipping practice.

Participants are encouraged to stay for the Festal Eucharist for St Matthew’s Day, 5.00 – 6.00pm.

Canon James Milne is the Precentor of St Paul’s Cathedral, responsible for its liturgy and worship, and was previously Convenor of the Liturgy Committee of the Scottish Episcopal Church.
