About this talk

A programme of exceptional short films spotlighting refugee narratives and stories of migration, curated by actor and writer Sarah Agha. The Arab Film Club returns to the Southbank Centre for a special Refugee Week screening. The films selected showcase the richly varied and inventive ways film-makers use the power of cinema, art and storytelling to humanise struggle and raise awareness through art. The screening is followed by a Q&A hosted by Sarah Agha with the film-makers on stage. The theme for this year’s curation is ‘courage’. Programme Cameraman by Arsalan Motavali (15 minutes, 2025) ‘In the late 90s, a newly immigrated Iranian cameraman finds himself adrift in London. Struggling to adapt, he must decide whether to risk his family’s limited savings on a stranger’s offer – one that promises a way back to the identity he once knew.’ Neo Nahda by May Ziadé (12 minutes, 2023) ‘Mona, a young woman living in London, becomes obsessed with photographs of Arab women cross-dressing in the 1920s. Somewhere in between her fantasies and reality, she goes on a feverish journey of uncovering erased histories and her own identity.’ Gaza Bride 17 by Waseem Khair (20 minutes, 2025) ‘A fisherman from Gaza is trapped in his haunting memories. After losing his only child, he suffers from post-traumatic disorder that leads him on a psychological journey, reliving his tragedy in a different reality.’ This event is part of Refugee Week and is presented in partnership with Counterpoints Arts.
