The Austrian Navy is commonly regarded as the successor to the Venetian Navy after 1797. This paper argues that such a view captures only the transfer of ships, ports, and personnel. Long before the acquisition of Venice, the Habsburg Monarchy had already developed maritime ambitions through Trieste, creating commercial networks, administrative institutions, and naval experiments that laid the foundations for an Austrian naval tradition. The Austrian Navy of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries emerged from the interaction between Venice's maritime inheritance and Vienna's imperial vision. It should therefore be understood as more than simply the successor to the Venetian Navy. Speaker: Jiayi Liu is a PhD candidate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, supervised by Professor Andrew Lambert. His research combines naval history and cultural history to examine Austrian Habsburg ideas of the sea and naval power from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century.
