About this talk

Oscar Murillo’s expansive practice encompasses painting, installation, performance and participation. In the summer of 2024, he took over Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall with a monumental participatory installation, The flooded garden . Here, the artist discusses elements that run through this commission and his wider practice, including references to bodies of water, such as the flood and the swamp, his practice of ‘social mapping’, which has grown out of his 15-year project Frequencies, and his unique form of painterly abstraction. Murillo is joined in conversation by independent curator Emily Pethick and Rosalie Doubal, Senior Curator, International Art at Tate. This talk marks the UK launch of Social Cataracts (2026) , a book edited by Emily Pethick and Sarah Demeuse that surveys Murillo’s practice, with a focus on work produced from 2019 to 2026. UNIQLO Tate Play: Oscar Murillo, The flooded garden was presented at Tate Modern 20 July - 24 August 2024. All Tate Modern entrances are step-free. You can enter via the Turbine Hall and into the Natalie Bell Building on Holland Street, or into the Blavatnik Building on Sumner street. There are lifts to every floor of the Blavatnik and Natalie Bell buildings. Alternatively you can take the stairs. Fully accessible toilets are located on every floor on the concourses. A quiet room is available to use in the Natalie Bell Building on Level 4. Ear defenders can be borrowed from the Ticket desks.
