About this talk
Marking 80 years of the BBC Russian Service. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the BBC's Russian Service. During that time it's grown from a short-wave radio service, to a multi-media operation reaching upwards of 6 million people every week. Throughout its history the Russian Service has battled the jammers and now the internet blockers to offer audiences an alternative to official propaganda and disinformation. As Vladimir Putin's full-scale war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, access to independent and trustworthy information is something Russian audiences need more than ever. And reaching them is almost as hard as it was 80 years ago. Join us for a panel discussion with current and past BBC Russian Service journalists to reflect on the challenges of reporting Russia, and the very real price BBC and other independent Russian-speaking journalists, are now paying to bring the news to Russia and to help audiences around the world understand more about a country that matters to all of us.
