About this talk
Andrey Kurkov and Manisha Ganguly in conversation with Kim Darroch. Andrey Kurkov (Three Years on Fire: The Destruction of Ukraine) and Manisha Ganguly (investigations correspondent and visual forensics lead, The Guardian) join Kim Darroch, Chair of the Orwell Foundation, to discuss their Orwell Prize shortlisted reporting on war crimes in Ukraine, and our age of impunity. Three Years on Fire is this third volume of Andrey Kurkov's war diaries, in which Ukraine's greatest living writer chronicles the third year of the full-scale invasion from his home in Kyiv and from journeys all over the country – capturing moments of horror, resilience, absurdity and grace with an unmatched clarity. Orwell Prize judge Sir Lawrence Freedman says 'In a series of moving and compelling essays Andrey Kurkov describes life in war-time Kyiv, full of illuminating observations on how Ukrainians have adapted to the dangers and sorrows of a conflict without apparent end, combined with informed political analysis.' Dr. Manisha Ganguly is an investigative journalist and filmmaker covering the intersection of technology and human rights. A pioneer in using open-source investigations to expose war crimes, her work has been cited by the United Nations, UK Parliament, and led to EU and US sanctions — reaching over 300 million viewers across four wars. A European Press Prize laureate, two-time Amnesty International Media Awards winner, and recipient of the George Weidenfeld Prize for Courageous Reporting, she is writing her first book, on impunity. The winners will be announced at the Bloomsbury Theatre on 25th June 2026. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes. In person.
