About this talk

Come together with architects, community organisers and artists to resist the isolation epidemic and reimagine the house as a home and true site of belonging. While we crave connection, modern architecture often isolates us. High-rise, densely populated buildings distance us from the natural world, and urban displacement driven by rapid gentrification erodes the shared spaces and experiences that once brought together and sustained our communities. This enlightening and engaging talk takes up the urgent question of how to reclaim these connections to each other and to the Earth, and why home design is seemingly shifting in the opposite direction. But what alternative models of living are out there? The panel of architects, community organisers and artists look to the past to learn from traditions of radical living, community-based living and the history of property ownership. The talk maps a rich and layered landscape of themes and ideas including architecture, the gendered domestic split, the decline of nuclear familial living and the rise of shared and community-based homes and queer-rooted spaces. This event is brought to you by the SORI Collective (Speaking Out, Reimagining Institutions): nine forward-thinking cultural programmers shaping the future of the arts. They are the driving force behind Southbank Centre Presents, a hands-on curation scheme empowering talent to build communities and redefine our cultural landscape as we celebrate 75 years.
