This illustrated talk will trace the history of the Oxford firm Salter’s Steamers, which was one of the most important businesses associated with the recent history of the Thames. It did more to popularise pleasure boating on the non-tidal waterway than any other firm on the river, and it achieved worldwide fame through its racing boats and its steamer service. The business made a considerable impact on Oxford and the Thames Valley, and it has historical links with many well-known characters including Lewis Carroll, Edward VII, T. E. Lawrence and C. S. Lewis.
