Dame Barbara Stoking is the Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee for Humanitarian Response and, until recently, served as the Chief Executive of Oxfam GB; IRSoc is delighted to host her in Oxford in sixth week.

Dame Barbara joined Oxfam GB as Chief Executive in 2001, having previously worked as an executive in the National Health Service. She served as head of the charity for nearly twelve years and was responsible for coordinating the charity’s response to crises in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, the tsunami in South Asia and the earthquake in Pakistan. Dame Barbara was also responsible for scaling up Oxfam’s efforts in combating HIV/AIDS and under-development; she resigned her position in February 2013. In addition to her role in Oxfam, Dame Barbara acted as Vice Chair of the Steering Committee for Humanitarian Response, an alliance which aims to coordinate the response to international crises amongst the major voluntary action charities. She also served as a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation’s High Level External Committee on Millennium Development Goals. In 2008, she was awarded a DBE and she currently serves as President of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge.
