Opportunities and challenges of utilising Earth observation within causal impact evaluation frameworks. Earth observation data have transformed our ability to monitor ecosystems and track ecological change. However, their use for detecting change and attributing it to specific conservation interventions remains limited by data availability, temporal coverage, and the capabilities of current detection methods. This seminar examines the opportunities and challenges of utilising Earth observation within causal impact evaluation frameworks. Drawing on recent methodological work and two case studies from carbon and biodiversity markets, it discusses practical considerations for designing causal inference approaches that make use of available Earth observation data and detection methods. The presentation will also assess the strength of evidence these approaches can provide and their potential to support more robust impact evaluation in nature finance.
