Oxford Atheists, Secularists and Humanists are excited to host a debate on the motion: “This House believes non-therapeutic male infant circumcision should no longer be permitted.”

Proposing will be Dr Antony Lempert, a GP and Chair of the Secular Medical Forum. He has argued that “religious justifications for ritual circumcision rest on the bankrupt premise that all baby boys born to Jews and Muslims will themselves identify with those religions and that they would want this to have been done to them in childhood.”

Opposing will be Adam Wagner, a barrister and editor of the UK Human Rights blog. He believes that “a ban would have a disproportionate impact on Muslims’ and Jews’ rights to religious practice and cannot be justified on the current scientific evidence.”

There will be an opportunity for questions from the floor.
