LARRY & JANET MOVE OUT and NOT JUST HOMELESS
Two short films exploring the housing crisis in the UK, both presented by the film makers, with a discussion about the film making process and subject.
Larry and Janet Move Out follows the story of a couple who are forced out of the family home they occupied for over 30 years on the Heygate Estate in Elephant and Castle, London, to make way for the local authority’s redevelopment plans.
Not Just Homeless was made by a group of formerly homeless people, students and staff members of two NGOs. They took on the challenge to document what it is like to be homeless in Oxford, the least affordable city in the UK. The team used action research and participatory video techniques to explore the diversity of causes of homelessness, the complexity of people’s struggles and how to break down harmful stereotyping. Their work resulted in a unique film that challenges our prejudices through the touching voices and inspirational stories of 24 people, whilst illustrating the key role that Oxford’s support organisations played in their journeys. The film was made during an action research and participatory video project delivered by InsightShare during the summer of 2015. This project was funded by Aspire and Oxford Homeless Pathways.
