With Alice Foster, art historian
Saturday 26 October, 2–3pm
Ashmolean Museum, Headley Lecture Theatre
‘That man who paints those dreadful pictures’ – so said Margaret Thatcher of Francis Bacon. The dystopian world that Bacon depicted in his paintings reflected his experiences in life, in particular as an ARP Warden in the Second World War. Learn about the influences, from Velasquez to Picasso and the filmmaker Eisenstein, which were crucial in forming the character of Bacon’s work.
