At the end of 2013, Amnesty International (AI) commissioned satellites revealed growing populations in North Korea’s political prison camps. Later this month, the UN Commission of Inquiry on human rights in the DPRK will be submitting its report and presenting it to the UN Human Rights Council in March.
Rajiv Narayan of AI will analyse the role of international non-governmental organisations, in particular AI and the history of AI’s work on the DPRK human rights issues and thereby highlight the systematic, grave and widespread human rights violations in that country.
He will go on to describe the manner in which the international community got seized of the human rights situation in the DPRK and how that has manifested finally in the establishment last year of the CoI-DPRK in the UN.The significance of the CoI-DPRK and also what it means for those working on the human rights situation in the DPRK will also be explored. Finally, Mr Narayan will explore the challenges and expectations CoI-DPRK faces.
