If kindness can kill, how can we really help? AND ‘The Pavement Perspective’ DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

With the 38% homeless cuts passed, homelessness in Oxford is now a bigger problem than before, whilst our awareness as to the problems faced by the homeless has increased. The question many people are asking now is, what can we do to help?

In light of the ‘Your Kindness can Kill’ campaign by the Oxford County Council, many have been shocked to discover that far from helping people by giving them money on the street- they could potentially be harming them. A panel of experts will therefore be discussing the issues brought up from the ‘Your Kindness Can Kill campaign’ as well as discussing the other ways there are in which we might be able to help the homeless beforea Q&A session with the audience.

We aim to get a wide range of different viewpoints and speaking will be:
– Scott Seamons (Labour Councillor & Board Member for Housing at Oxford City Council)
– Joe Batty (Outreach Services Manager at Broadway)
– David Robertson (Client Services Manager at Aspire)
– Nathan Akehurst (Student and founding member of Oxford Tenant’s Union)

After the discussion, we will be showing, for the second time in Oxford, ‘The Pavement Perspective’, a 15 minute documentary seeking to explore the stories behind the faces of London’s street community, and through these ‘humanise’ rough sleepers to a widely desensitized general public. There will of course be the opportunity for those who have already seen the documentary to leave early.

Free wine and nibbles will be available throughout the evening.
