Surgical Care in Austere Environments – Challenges and Opportunities

Oxford Global Health Group and the Oxford Society for Medicine are very fortunate to host Mr Babulal Sethia. He is the incumbent President of the Royal Society of Medicine as well as a consultant congenital heart surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Having completed his training in Glasgow and London, he became a consultant in 1986. In the past 15 years, Mr Sethia has become extensively involved in the humanitarian development of surgical healthcare provision in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America.

Expect to hear about Mr Sethia’s experiences volunteering for the charity ‘Chain of Hope’ and in particular the challenges that he encountered when practicing surgery in Palestine and Algeria. In particular, he will cover current challenges and opportunities facing global health today such as the Millennium Development Goals, climate change and the Arab Spring.
