Esther Reed is currently working for Christian Aid’s campaign against tax avoidance. This paper asks what, if anything, is wrong with tax avoidance and how Christian ethics might bear witness in this context to Christ’s redemptive work of salvation and the hope of transformation in Him. Attention is paid not only to questions about the ‘how?’ of international economic justice but also the ‘what?’ and the ‘who?’ Mark 12:17 is said to suggest an approach that does not start from first principles philosophically but with a different, ‘transactional’ approach to justice that focuses on the modes(s) of (in)justice that flow from the transaction itself — in this instance, trade.
