11am Prof. James L. Kugel

“Midrash and the Dead Sea Scrolls”

James L. Kugel is chair of the Institute for the History of the Jewish Bible, Bar Ilan University in Israel and the Harry M. Starr Professor Emeritus of Classical and Modern Hebrew Literature at Harvard University.

11.30am Professor Gershon Greenberg

“A Unique Religious response to the Holocaust: The Lubavitcher Rebbe”

Gershon Greenberg is professor at Department of Philosophy, American University in Washington DC, and author of three definitive bibliographies of religious thought and the Holocaust, as well as numerous articles on German-Jewish philosophy, history of Jewish thought in America and religious responses through the Holocaust. He serves as consultant of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

12pm Dr. Adam Ferziger

“From Lubavitch to Lakewood: The Chabadization of Contemporary Orthodoxy”

Dr. Adam S. Ferziger is senior lecturer and vice chairman of the Graduate Program in Contemporary Jewry at Bar-Ilan University. In 2011, Ferziger was the recipient of Bar-Ilan’s “Outstanding Lecturer” award. Currently he is a visiting fellow at Wolfson College and the Oriental Institute, University of Oxford and co-leader of the international research group on Orthodoxy and theology at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

1pm Dr. Naftali Loewenthal

“Hasidic Prayer and the Contemporary Jewish Imagination”

Naftali Loewenthal lectures on Jewish spirituality at University College London’s Department of Hebrew & Jewish Studies, and author of Communicating the Infinite (Chicago University Press) and numerous studies of Hasidism.

1.30pm Dr. Israel Sandman

“Fusing Finitude and Infinity: Analysis of a Discourse by the Lubavitcher Rebbe”

Israel Sandman is Fellow at University College London’s Department of Hebrew & Jewish Studies. His areas of research include medieval Jewish thought, and medieval Hebrew manuscripts.

2pm Professor Yaakov Ross

“Where should we look for miracles?”

Jacob Joshua Ross is Emeritus Professor in the Philosophy Department of Tel-Aviv Universit. He received his Rabbinic training at Ponivezh Yeshiva, Bnei-Barak. He has written 3 books in general and Jewish philosophy. He served as Deputy Principal at the former Jews’ College in London between 1963 -1968, immediately after “the Jacobs affair”.
