About this talk

What happens when power and principle collide? From Afghanistan and Iraq to NATO and Latin America, Catherine Royle has spent nearly four decades navigating the realities of international power. In this special conversation marking the launch of the Oxford Political Review’s 19th issue, 'Might Makes Right', she will reflect on the enduring tension between ethics and power in an ever-uncertain age. As geopolitical tensions reshape the international order, these questions have become increasingly urgent. Drawing on a distinguished diplomatic career spanning Afghanistan, Iraq, Venezuela, Chile, and NATO, Catherine Royle, Principal of Somerville College, will reflect on how power is exercised, challenged, and justified in today’s world. In conversation with Oxford Political Review Managing Editor Elena Sofia Massacesi, Royle will explore the relationship between might and morality in international affairs, marking the launch of the Review’s nineteenth issue, Might Makes Right. The event will feature a one-hour discussion followed by a drinks reception. Free copies of the issue will be available, and OPR tote bags will be on sale in support of the magazine. Registration is essential and places are limited. Please sign up by 5 June.
