About this talk
This event is in-person at the Museum in the Headley Lecture Theatre and online via Zoom Tickets are £8 each. Booking is essential With Peter Vass, art historian Peter Vass will be looking at Spencer’s flower and garden paintings which many critics believe to be his finest works. These magnificent paintings of gardens, houses and landscapes were often set in Spencer's home village of Cookham, depicting small alleys, overgrown backyards, gardens with hedges and fences, mowed lawns and beds that were filled with cottage flowers. These works proved ever popular during his lifetime. Peter will also examine how, in later life, Spencer created the persona of British art’s eccentric genius, pushing his pram of painting materials around Cookham, carrying out his commissions.
