After the successful launch of ScreenTalk Oxfordshire, we are delighted to welcome acclaimed, international award winning Producer Elizabeth Karlsen to our next event on Wed 14 November.
Elizabeth will join Carl Schoenfeld in conversation, followed by a Q&A session. The talk will be preceded by a screening of her recent film On Chesil Beach.
Having co-founded No. 9 Films with Stephen Woolley in 2002, Elizabeth’s previous films include such greats as Carol, The Crying Game, Made in Dagenham, Little Voice and Great Expectations. Elizabeth will talk about her career, challenges she’s faced and how to make a good film.
Alan Rusbridger will be in conversation with Anglo-Nigerian historian and BBC producer, David Olusoga.

Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin is a master of collage, and has made a treasure trove of films that testify to his profound knowledge and love of cinema, and of re-purposing found footage. Originally commissioned by the Documentary Channel, My Winnipeg tells the story of Maddin’s home city from the point of view of a narrator who is desperate to leave the snow and nostalgia of its clutches. This talk explores the ways in which myth, folklore and urban legend contribute to a portrait of the city that is both true and false. It follows the red herrings, the reconstructions and pathways through Winnipeg as narrated by Darcy Fehr who plays Maddin on screen. It considers the gaps and fissures in the dialogue, and the ways in which voice-over narration enters the realm of fantasy while adhering to documentary conventions. What, we might ask, of the ‘rejected narration’? All will be revealed. Finally the talk will discuss the collage of sound and image in provoking emotional and phenomenological reactions to spaces, both real and imagined.
Unpacking the mysteries of film and broadcast finance and distribution with Oxford’s award winning Producer, Victor Glynn in conversation with his Producer son Phin Glynn. The talk will be followed by a Q & A.
Victor muses:
“My, how times times have changed. It is so much easier these days for a would be film maker given the generally accessible technology. There are so many platforms to choose between – from Netflix and Amazon to You Tube and i-tunes. Who needs the major studios and broadcasters anymore?
Really?”
The father and son producers will share their experiences and thoughts in what we know will be an entertaining and informative way.
Victor is a Prix Europa award-winning film producer whose work has been regularly distributed by companies such as Sony, Warner’s and Universal and shown on HBO, CBS, BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and more recently Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Phin has produced six films in the last two years – the first, “Mad to be Normal”, from director Robert Mullan, starred David Tennant and Elisabeth Moss, and won best international film at the Galway Film Festival. The most recent “Waiting for Anya” was an adaptation of the Michael Morpurgo novel of the same name starring Jean Reno, Anjelica Huston and Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp.

FLJS Films is pleased to present a special screening of Golden Kingdom, the acclaimed first international feature film to be produced in Myanmar since its reopening. The film’s director Brian Perkins will discuss the film and its genesis, which included a campaign to partly crowdfund its production.
Set and shot in a remote monastery in Shan State — a region in which separatists have fought a decades-long war against the Myanmar government — Golden Kingdom follows the story of four young monks, each endearingly and intelligently played by local non-professional actors. When their simple life of meditation and play is interrupted by an urgent call to engage with the vastly more threatening environment of the country at large, the film depicts the physical and spiritual journey of one of the boys through the troubled country as civil strife breaks out.
Touching on themes of displacement and the quest for safe passage and refuge, and featuring exquisitely evocative sound design by Oscar nominee David C. Hughes (GONE GIRL, HER), Golden Kingdom subtly alludes to the wider geopolitical currents emerging in Myanmar, while avoiding easy answers in its enigmatic exploration of the beauty, spirituality, and fortitude of the country and its people.

We are delighted to invite to a documentary film-screening of the film Dreamland, followed by a Skype Q&A with one of the film-makers, Professor Britt Kramvig.
The film: Viewed through the camera lens of a philosopher, it is inspired by a line from “Dreamland” by romantic poet Edgar Allan Poe “…by a route obscure and lonely, haunted by ill angels only…” A journey through people-places in Arctic landscapes is made by the figure of a native anthropologist. She follows in the footsteps of many others, recounting experience. Viewers glimpse moments of a sublime, the subject of Poe’s poem. The movie gives form to hopes for futures different than pasts. Following the Palm D’or winning success of his latest film Shoplifters, FLJS Films is pleased to present master director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s previous film, The Third Murder, his elliptical reworking of Kurosawa’s Rashomon for modern times.
The Third Murder is an existential crime drama through which Kore-eda takes up his trademark themes of unconventional parent–child relations, while subjecting to his forensic gaze the gap that emerges between the letter of the law and justice truly served.
From the arresting opening scenes of a factory worker’s cold-blooded murder of his boss, the film employs an intriguing and expertly woven narrative of shifting stories to carry us into a profound essay on the subjectivity of truth. In doing so, The Third Murder stands as an understated yet powerful indictment of the death penalty that continues to cast a long shadow over modern-day Japan.
Sir Tim Hitchens, Wolfson College President and former UK Ambassador to Tokyo, will introduce a pre-screening talk by Tony Rayns, BFI film critic for Sight&Sound magazine and expert in East Asian cinema.
Tony is the author of books on Seijun Suzuki, Wong Kar-wai and Rainer Werner Fassbinder; a television presenter for a series on Chinese cinema; a screenwriter; film festival programmer; and commentator on DVD releases.

Professor Eudine Barriteau will give a talk on: ‘Coming into our own? Women and Power in the Caribbean’.
Professor Eudine Barriteau is a Grenadian born Caribbean feminist, scholar and activist with considerable experience in research, senior administration and coordination of regional projects. She has been awarded several academic scholarships and awards from universities and organisations. Professor Barriteau was the first Head of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus. She was appointed Deputy Principal of the Cave Hill Campus in 2008 and Principal in 2015. Her research interests encompass transformational educational leadership, feminist theorizing, gender and public policy and investigations of the Caribbean political economy.

Half-remembered worlds of violent oral history invade the kitchen and layer themselves over everyday life, shining light on the laughter that heals intergenerational traumas, and celebrating the overflowings and excesses of a life shaped by migration.
With an original musical score, a chorus of performance poets and contemporary dancers, and stories passed on from a generation of migrants, My mother runs in zig-zags is a bold new tragicomedy, devised by the best of Oxford University’s BAME actors and performers.

Sound Diaries expands awareness of the roles of sound and listening in daily life. The project explores the cultural and communal significance of sounds and forms a research base for projects executed both locally and Internationally, in Beijing, Brussels, Tallinn, Cumbria and rural Oxfordshire.

Natalie Triebwasser, Head of Production at Oxford based production company Quicksilver Media, makers of “Unreported World” – the UK’s longest running foreign current affairs series on Channel 4, and “Killer Ratings” – a documentary series currently streaming on Netflix, talks to award winning journalists Jenny Kleeman and Ramita Navai about their respective careers and the unique challenges that documentary makers face.

FLJS Films opens its 2019-20 programme with acclaimed director Mike Leigh’s latest film Peterloo, which, by bringing to light a little-known atrocity in Manchester 200 years ago, makes a timely comment on the repercussions and resonances of public protest.
The film depicts the nascent labour movement of the nineteenth century, as the hunger and poverty brought about by the Corn Laws (which barred imports of cheap grain from the continent) drove 60,000 peaceful protesters to Manchester’s St Peter’s Field to demand the reform of parliamentary representation.
When the demonstration was brutally put down by the cavalry, leaving 18 people dead and hundreds injured, the government moved to suppress reporting by a nascent free press, and the event has since been largely forgotten.
On the bicentenary year of the massacre, and with the current resurgence of popular demonstrations and civil disobedience over Brexit and the climate crisis, Peterloo offers an invaluable reminder of the power of political resistance.
Historian of protest Dr Katrina Navickas will give a short introductory talk on her involvement in the historical research for Peterloo and the film’s political and contemporary resonances.

As an actor he is best known for his roles as Dean Learner in Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and Maurice Moss in the Emmy Award-winning The IT Crowd, for which we was awarded a BAFTA as Best Performance in a Comedy.

Join us for a special lecture with St Cross alumna Lisa Downing, who will discuss the research behind her new book: Selfish Women. This event will be followed by a drinks reception.
Lisa Downing is Professor of French Discourses of Sexuality at the University of Birmingham, UK. She is a specialist in interdisciplinary sexuality and gender studies, critical theory, and the history of cultural concepts, focusing especially on questions of exceptionality, difficulty, and (ab)normality. Recent books include: The Subject of Murder: Gender, Exceptionality, and the Modern Killer (2013); Fuckology: Critical Essays on John Money’s Diagnostic Concepts (co-authored with Iain Morland and Nikki Sullivan, 2015); and After Foucault (as editor, 2018), as well as Selfish Women. Her next book project will be a short manifesto entitled Against Affect.

Mobile phone filmmaking. It’s the camera of choice for some.
Is the best camera the one you have with you?
We will welcome expert interactive filmmaker and thriller writer Nihal Tharoor (Electric Noir Studios) and former BBC Trainer Bob Walters (MediaInk TV, iphone-filmmaking).
This session will look at the potential of mobile phone cameras for low budget reasons and for those starting out, but also for more experienced filmmakers interested in producing gritty styled thrillers or entertainment for younger audiences who use the platform most. Whether you are using mobile phones for short films, pilots, showreels, documentary filmmaking or features this event offers great value – we’ll be looking at expert output, hearing from passionate speakers and offering some bonus technical tips.
Opportunities to network with local film and TV professionals after main talk

Join us for a screening of The Fly, the classic 1958 sci-fi horror movie produced and directed by Kurt Neumann and starring Vincent Price, Al Hedison and Patricia Owens. A scientist invents a teleportation device, but fate has other plans after an accident leads to a gruesome, life-changing injury. This brilliant 1950s sci-fi, famously remade by David Cronenberg in the 80s, treads a fine line between shlocky fun and an unnerving nature parable.
The screening will be preceded by an introductory with Dr Roderick Bailey, Medical Historian at the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities. Rod specialises in the study of modern war and conflict, the history of medicine, and the spaces in which those worlds overlap.
David Cronenberg’s ‘body horror’ film ‘The Fly’ is more than science fiction. The movie was based on an original story, published in Playboy magazine in 1957, whose author had been a spy in World War II. Dr Roderick Bailey of Oxford’s Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities, works on the history of human enhancement. In the Q&A Roderick will discuss how secret procedures carried out in wartime London may have shaped this disturbing creation.

Dr Zohar Rubinstein, clinical and organizational psychologist, specialist in mental health in emergency situations, and one of the founding members of The Interdisciplinary Master Program for Emergency and Disaster Management at the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, will be answering questions.

In modern high-tech health care, patients appear to be the stumbling block.
Uninformed, anxious, noncompliant individuals with unhealthy lifestyles who demand treatments advertised by celebrities and insist on unnecessary but expensive diagnostics may eventually turn into plaintiffs. But what about their physicians? About ten years ago, Muir Gray and Gerd Gigerenzer published a book with the subtitle “Envisioning health care 2020”. They listed “seven sins” of health care systems then, one of which was health professionals’ stunning lack of risk literacy. Many were not exactly sure what a false-positive rate was, or what overdiagnosis and survival rates mean, and they were unable to evaluate articles in their own field. As a consequence, the ideals of informed consent and shared decision-making remain a pipedream – both doctors and patients are habitually misled by biased information in health brochures and advertisements. At the same time, the risk literacy problem is one of the few in health care that actually have a known solution. A quick cure is to teach efficient risk communication that fosters transparency as opposed to confusion, both in medical school and in CME. It can be done with 4th graders, so it should work with doctors, too.
Now, in 2020, can every doctor understand health statistics? In this talk, Gerd Gigerenzer will describe the efforts towards this goal, a few successes, but also the steadfast forces that undermine doctors’ ability to understand and act on evidence. Moreover, the last decade has seen two new forces that distract from solving the problem. The first is the promise of digital technology, from diagnostic AI systems to big data analytics, which consumes much of the attention. Digital technology is of little help if doctors do not understand it. Second, our efforts to make patients competent and to encourage them to articulate their values are now in conflict with the new paternalistic view that patients just need to be nudged into better behaviour.

We are delighted to welcome Shakespearean actor, director, academy award nominee and anti-Apartheid campaigner, Dame Janet Suzman, to St Peter’s College.
Janet Suzman remains one of the most respected classical stage actresses of her time, having portrayed most of Shakespeare’s heroines, including Cleopatra, during her career. She has also worked alongside some of stage and screen’s most legendary stars, including Marlon Brando, Sir Laurence Olivier, Ava Gardner and Sir Derek Jacobi.
She was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Czarina Alexandra in Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), a sweeping historical epic about the fall of the Romanovs.
Suzman also starred alongside Donald Sutherland and Susan Sarandon in A Dry White Season (1989), a provocative drama that centres on a white schoolmaster’s gradual awakening to the horrors of government-sanctioned racism in South Africa during the 1970s.

In 2010 she co-founded Touretteshero as a creative response to her experiences, and toured the world with her multi-award-winning stage show, Backstage in Biscuit Land.
Join us for a screening of the 2018 documentary, Me, My Mouth and I, part of BBC Two’s Performance Live strand. Exploring Jess Thom’s funny and unpredictable journey of discovery into one of Samuel Beckett’s most complex plays, Not I, the film asks us to reconsider issues of representation and social exclusion as she prepares to perform the role of ‘Mouth’ in front of a live theatre audience. The screening with be followed by a Q & A with Jess herself.

Supermodel and activist Diandra Forrest also joins the conversation. Fellow guest speaker Stephan Bognar, Executive Director of New York Dermatology Group Foundation, completes the line-up. They worked together previously on the Colorfull campaign, which was conceived by NYDG to highlight the prejudice that albinism attracts.
