In autumn last year Balliol College was pleased to acquire for its research collection the books and papers of a remarkable woman called Josephine Reid, relating to her employer, the writer Graham Greene (Balliol 1922). Josephine Reid was Greene’s secretary and literary typist from 1958 to 1992. Nicholas Dennys, bookseller and nephew of Graham Greene, will be in conversation with Naomi Tiley, Balliol’s Librarian, giving a personal insight into Graham Greene’s writing and Josephine Reid’s collection.

Six members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), including comedian and journalist Mark Thomas are taking legal action against the Metropolitan Police’s monitoring and keeping of their information on a database that deals with extremists. An illustrated talk by four of those in the case discuss how journalists documenting protest are coming under surveillance. The panel includes photojournalist and campaign photographer Jess Hurd, Video Journalist Jason N Parkinson and Photographer David Hoffman, chaired by curator of OVADA’s current Resistance is Fertile exhibition, Adrian Arbib.

Middle Eastern cultural heritage is under threat as never before. These talks highlight what the world is losing in Iraq and Syria, as well as talking about Oxford University’s ‘Endangered Archaeology of the Middle East and North Africa’ project.
Dr Paul Collins spoke in April this year about the recent destruction of museums, libraries, archaeological sites, mosques, churches and shrines across northern Iraq to highlight the unique heritage that is being lost.

A lecture in aid of the British red Cross services in Oxfordshire and beyond kindly given by award winning journalist Peter Taylor and entitled ‘Terrorism from IRA to Al Quaeda and ISIL.’ In his lecture Peter will describe his 40 year journey from reporting the IRA to investigating Al Qaeda and, latterly, assessing the Islamic State. He will discuss how successful – or otherwise – governments and states have been in countering the threats and addressing their root causes.

Charles Moore is a journalist and former editor of the Daily Telegraph and The Spectator. After ten years of research and 300 interviews, he embarked on a three volume life of Margaret Thatcher.
The first volume of his bestselling biography of Margaret Thatcher, published in 2013, won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography, the HW Fisher Best First Biography Prize and Political Book of the Year at the Paddy Power Political Book Awards. The second volume of his biography of Margaret Thatcher, published in the autumn of 2015, is a detailed account of Thatcher’s life, as she saw it, from the summer of 1982 in the aftermath of the Falklands through to the general elections of 1983 and 1987.
From 5.00pm, LMH will be selling copies of both volumes in the lobby of Pipe Partridge Building. The event will start at 5.45pm in the Simpkins Lee Theatre and will finish at 7.00pm.
