Are you a secondary school teacher in your first few years of teaching? Come along to a day full of fresh ideas and update your knowledge of the latest educational research and its applicability in practice.

The forum will include a series of workshops for you to choose and a panel discussion exploring different routes in career progression. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The workshops provide opportunities to update your knowledge of the latest educational research and its applicability in practice both in your subject and in other areas of current interest to schools. Confirmed workshops this year include:
-A subject-specific poster display and mini-talks from practising teachers who have completed research-informed interventions in their own classrooms
-Preventing and de-escalating challenging behaviour
-Strategies to reduce marking load without compromising on quality for students
-Teaching with objects (in collaboration with Oxford galleries and museums)
-Developing effective student questioning

Jointly organised by the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and the Anscombe Bioethics Centre. This unusual online event will see Alberto Guibilini and David Jones adopting the other’s position on conscientious objection, arguing for the opposing view in an attempt to explore not only the subject, but the very nature of disagreement and discussion. Audience members will be encouraged to explore their views on conscientious objection in the same way.

Professor Buchanan introduces his latest book ‘Our Moral Fate: Evolution and the Escape From Tribalism’. Is tribalism-the political and cultural divisions between Us and Them-an inherent part of our basic moral psychology? Many scientists link tribalism and morality, arguing that the evolved “moral mind” is tribalistic. Any escape from tribalism, according to this thinking, would be partial and fragile, because it goes against the grain of our nature. In this book, Allen Buchanan offers a counterargument: the moral mind is highly flexible, capable of both tribalism and deeply inclusive moralities, depending on the social environment in which the moral mind operates.0We can’t be morally tribalistic by nature, Buchanan explains, because quite recently there has been a remarkable shift away from tribalism and toward inclusiveness, as growing numbers of people acknowledge that all human beings have equal moral status, and that at least some nonhumans also have moral standing. These are what Buchanan terms the Two Great Expansions of moral regard. And yet, he argues, moral progress is not inevitable but depends partly on whether we have the good fortune to develop as moral agents in a society that provides the right conditions for realizing our moral potential. But morality need not depend on luck. We can take charge of our moral fate by deliberately shaping our social environment-by engaging in scientifically informed “moral institutional design.” For the first time in human history, human beings can determine what sort of morality is predominant in their societies and what kinds of moral agents they are.

People with albinism face discrimination across the globe but are often left out of activist efforts around diversity and inclusion.

In this episode, we speak to representatives of Sesame Street Workshop, who have been championing diversity for years. With a breadth of expertise in the art of embracing diversity, this insightful look into the world of Sesame Street gives us new ways of approaching our goals. Supermodel and activist Diandra Forrest also joins the conversation. Fellow guest speaker Stephan Bognar, Executive Director of New York Dermatology Group Foundation, completes the line-up. They worked together previously on the Colorfull campaign, which was conceived by NYDG to highlight the prejudice that albinism attracts.

Dementia:Forget about a cure, focus on care and prevention @ Online

Join the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences for their annual research lecture, delivered by Dame Professor Louise Robinson. The biggest risk factor for developing dementia is age, with dementia now the most common cause of death in women over 65 years of age in the United Kingdom (UK). Our ageing populations mean that the number of people with dementia globally is predicted to rapidly increase, although research from the UK and Europe has shown that modification of key lifestyle factors may positively influence this. Over the last decade, the UK has had a strong policy focus on dementia, initially via a National Dementia Strategy and followed by Prime Minister’s National Dementia Challenge. This led to the creation of the unique £200 million UK National Dementia Research Institute, with a main focus on finding the ‘cure’ and/or novel dementia drug therapies. Professor Robinson will discuss why future research should be as equally focused on improving the quality of dementia care and targeting future prevention as exploring the elusive cure.

What does our calling to be disciples of Christ mean for our life as students, academics, and thoughtful professionals? What are some of the promises and pitfalls of the academic life? How can postgraduate students and academics serve and relate to the wider body of Christ, the Church? Explore these questions and more at the first of two DCM conferences here in Oxford.

Who? Postgraduates, postdocs and academic staff at Oxford and Oxford Brookes University are welcome to attend this virtual conference.

Where/When? Subject to Covid-restrictions we hope to run this as a one day conference on Saturday 30th January focused on discussion groups (in-person or on Zoom) and live Q&A sessions with speakers Three talks will be pre-recorded to watch prior to the conference either on your own or by joining an optional ‘viewing party’ on Friday 29th January.
Alumni will all be assigned to virtual discussion groups.

Speakers include: N.T. Wright (Theology), Stephen Tuck (History) and Katherine Blundell (Astrophysics).

Early bird standard registration is £10 and includes lunch.
*Alumni registrants are encouraged to offer a donation towards their conference fee.

Note: If we cannot meet in-person in groups of 6 and the entire conference has to take place via Zoom then we will give participants the option of a refund for the price of their ticket and we will adjust the format of the conference accordingly.

Revd Nevsky Everett, Chaplain of Keble College, the University of Oxford.

Revd Dr John Goldingay (DD, Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth), the David Allan Hubbard Professor Emeritus of Old Testament in the School of Theology of Fuller Theological Seminary in California, but lives in Oxford, England. He was previously principal and professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at St. John’s Theological College in Nottingham, England. His books include An Introduction to the Old Testament, A Reader’s Guide to the Bible, Reading Jesus’s Bible, and commentaries on Psalms, Isaiah, and Daniel. He has also authored a Biblical Theology, the three-volume Old Testament Theology and the seventeen-volume Old Testament for Everyone series, and has published a translation of the entire Old Testament called The First Testament: A New Translation.

Ustadah Yomna Helmy, Teaching Associate at The Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of Islamic Studies at the University of Cambridge. She taught and developed a range of courses including, Tafseer, Hadith, Islamic law, Salafism, Arabic Syntax, Morphology, Quranic Arabic, and Spoken Arabic. Yomna is interested in Social Islamic thoughts and ethics within the fields of Hadith and Quranic Studies.

Rabbi David Wolpe, the Max Webb Senior Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, California. He was named the most influential rabbi in America by Newsweek Magazine and one of the 50 most influential Jews in the world by the Jerusalem Post. He previously taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, Hunter College, and UCLA.
