In 2014 war remains a reality that millions face daily. It is a year in which many predict the reemergence of wars in some regions and question the validity, success and potential aftermath in the planned end of wars in others. ‘Amid the clash of arms the laws are not silent.’ If you want to form or develop your opinion on the truth of Lord Atkin’s famous claim then this talk may be of interest.
Janina Dill, Hedley Bull Fellow at the Department of Politics and IR, will be discussing the dilemma of the belligerent in the 21st century. This covers the limited ability of protecting individual rights in war, what we can and cannot expect legal regulation to accomplish and what follows for the legitimacy (or lack thereof) of the use of force in the 21st century. Referring to empirical examples from interviews she conducted with US air force personnel, Janina will provide a way in to these issues for those who know less about the topic and provide interesting first-hand research for those who want to take their knowledge and opinions further.
