Following his education and training as an artist/craftsman and teacher, John Henry Brookes was appointed Head of the Oxford School of Art in 1928 with two members of staff and 90, mostly part-time, students.Bryan Brown’s book cover

When he retired 28 years later, in 1956, most of the fields of study of a 21st century university had been established.

Bryan will be sharing his insights into the life of John Henry Brookes, celebrating his work and remarkable achievements.

Bryan Brown PhotoBryan Brown is an alumnus, Honorary Fellow and advisor to Oxford Brookes. Trained as a designer, his career has been at the forefront of UK design practice, managing his own consultancy businesses. When Oxford Polytechnic became a university, Bryan recommended the name and designed its new brand identity. Bryan’s biography of John Henry Brookes is due for publication in 2015.
