Young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people (LGBTQ) are more likely to suffer from suicidal thoughts than their straight friends. 42% of young LGBTQ people have sought medical help for anxiety or depression. 52% of young LGBT people report self-harm either now or in the past. 44% of young LGBTQ people have considered suicide.

Why is it that LGBTQ people show higher rates of poor psychological health, including high rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal feelings, and drug & alcohol misuse?

Would banning gay conversion therapy and removing HIV stigma promote better mental health for gay men? Will the acknowledgement of transgender and asexual identities as normal in psychiatry prevent the pathologisation and medicalisation of the queer community?
