The Centre’s Research Associate Karel Adámek will present a seminar on using single pulse detection algorithms for AstroAccelerate.

Abstract

Single pulse detection has become significant in recent years due to discovery of fast radio bursts (FRB). Single pulse search looks for time isolated events (like RRATs of FRBs) but also for irregular events like giant pulses from pulsars. Such an algorithm must be fast but it must also have as little sensitivity loss as possible.

Single pulse detection is done by applying appropriate matched filter to a data we want to investigate. For the Centre’s single pulse algorithms we have used a simplest matched filter, a boxcar filter, because it allows us to reuse computational resources and it is independent on pulse profile.

In his talk Karel Adámek will describe algorithms the Centre has developed for real-time single pulse search and will discuss sensitivity loss introduced by such algorithms. He will also present achieved sensitivities and performance.

About the speaker

Karel Adámek is a Post Doctoral Research Associate working in radio astronomy software development. He finished his PhD study of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics at Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic in 2016. His current projects relate to Astro-Accelerate and the Square Kilometre Array.
