Wouldn’t it be handy to have a doctor in your pocket? Your very own personal GP who could advise you on nutrition or mental health management or help monitor dementia symptoms. With the advent of medical apps this is becoming more and more possible – from the prevention of childhood obesity to heart monitors and diabetes trackers, we have more individual personal health data than ever before. But what are the risks and what are the benefits of such advanced technologies? How do we design apps to make them beneficial to patients and useful to medical professionals?
Hadley Beeman is the Chief Technology Advisor for the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, she works closely with NHS Digital and NHS England. She focuses on building the future both through code and technical standards and through government policy. She previously co-chaired the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Data on the web working group and was appointed the W3C Technical Architecture Group by Sir Tim Berners-Lee where she advised on the future architecture of the World Wide Web.
Edward Meinert is a chartered engineer specialising in digital strategy and software engineering. His research is on the use of digital technology in medicine with a focus on mobile digital apps, wearables, robotic process automation in digital health systems and software application development for enhancement of data collection and information dissemination. He is a member of the Healthcare Translation Research Group focusing on regenerative medicine and e-health including medicine optimisation and supply chain security.
Dr Lucy Rogers is an inventor with a sense of fun, a problem solver, maker and a judge on Robot Wars. She looks at things from a different angle and transforms simple electronics into cool gadgets, science into plain English and problems into opportunities. Making is an integral part of her life which led her to found the Guild of Makers which exists to encourage Makers to support, encourage and help each other.
