The Oxford University United Nations Association [OUUNA] is pleased to host Mr. Ian Martin, former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Libya, Nepal and East Timor. Ian Martin will speak on UN Peace Operations and his experiences in various missions.

Ian Martin was named Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Post-Conflict Planning for Libya, shortly after international involvement in the Libyan conflict began. Shortly before international involvement concluded, following the fall of Gadaffi’s last stronghold, Ian was appointed the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and helped oversee the establishment of the transitional government.

This is the latest in a long line of UN posts that includes Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal and East Timor, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, Chief of the UN Human Rights Field Operation in Rwanda and Director for Human Rights of the International Civilian Mission in Haiti. Ian was also previously Secretary General of Amnesty International from 1986 to 1992.

Ian Martin read History and Economics at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, after which he completed graduate studies in development economics at Harvard University.
