Acclaimed novelist and essayist Kaya Genç will be at Bloomsbury talking about the role of free expression in modern Turkey; a land torn between East and West, and between its glorious past and a dangerous, unpredictable future.

Kaya’s new book The Lion and the Nightingale tells of his extraordinary quest to find the places and people in whom the contrasts of Turkey’s rich past meet. The people he encountered present a spellbinding story of a country whose history has been split between East and West, between violence and beauty – between the roar of the lion and the song of the nightingale. Kaya will be in conversation with award-winning editor Rachael Jolley about his travels, the role of expression and Turkey’s relentless struggle toward freedom.

This event is presented in partnership with Index on Censorship, a nonprofit that campaigns for and defends free expression worldwide.
