We’re discussing the perception of colour with artist DAVID BATCHELOR and colour psychophysicist ANDREW HANSON of NPL. As with all ideas-matter-sphere events, the salon is about sharing ideas and creative discussion between audience and speakers. Come and join us in the atmospheric Devereux pub.

About the speakers and talks:

Artist DAVID BATCHELOR will look at aspects of colour and the city – and in particular colour and darkness. His own work comprises three-dimensional structures, photographs, paintings and drawings, and relates to a long term interest in colour and urbanism. He exhibits widely, and has just this week unveiled an exciting large-scale installation at St Pancras Station. He is the author of several books on colour including ‘Chromophobia’ and ‘The Luminous and the Grey’.

Colour SalonColour Psychophysicist ANDREW HANSON’s talk highlights what scientists think colour is, how we specify and measure it, and the variety of its perception in different environmental and observer conditions. Andrew works at the National Physical Laboratory, specialising for 20 years in the measurement and perception of colour. And following on from the Colour Salon, there is a rare opportunity to explore the workings of the National Physical Laboratory at their Open House on 20 May.

And the chairperson ..

will be DR SHEENA CALVERT. Sheena has chaired several popular salons and brings a further perspective on colour. Having studied colour theory at Yale, her research involves looking at various philosophical aspects of colour, including the linguistic definition[s] and experience of colour. In connection with these interests, she runs a project called ‘What is Colour?’ at Central St. Martins, as part of the Design and Interaction programme.
