The women of the Old Testament live in a world which is alien to us, and where the limitations on their lives seem sexist. Can these stories connect with us as women and men of faith in the 21stcentury? We will explore the whole subject of women’s voices and experience in the Old Testament, including how and why authors chose to tell these stories in the first place. Focussing particularly on Sarah and Hagar in Genesis and Hannah in the First Book of Samuel, we will also look at issues of faith, jealousy, motherhood, power, pain and sudden reversals, and what we can learn from them today.

The Revd Dr Jenni Williams is Tutor in Old Testament at Wycliffe Hall, the training college for Anglican clergy in Oxford, and researches feminist biblical criticism. She is the author of God Remembered Rachel: Women’s Stories in the Old Testament and Why They Matter (SPCK 2014).
