Today Paddington spreads over a very large area from the Edgware and Bayswater roads through the Westway to Maida Vale. It leapt into suburbia from its village basis with the coming of the extension of the Grand Union Canal to Paddington Basin and then Brunel’s Great Western Railway with its masterpiece, Paddington Station. This lecture will detail London’s canal system and the early development of the railways as well as the modern developments notably around Paddington Basin and St. Mary’s Hospital.
