The Department of Mathematics at King’s College London is pleased to welcome José L. Rodríguez Blancas from the University of Almería, Spain to King’s College London on March 1st. Professor Blancas will deliver a student colloquium on the The Geometry of Soap Bubbles in Action.
Abstract:
I will show some of the best known minimal surfaces and figures that can be realised with soapy water. I will talk about some isoperimetric problems using threads, and about Plateau’s laws using artistic figures. In this presentation, I will mention famous mathematicians who have studied the geometry and topology of such surfaces throughout history, and applications in architecture, engineering, etc.
Refreshments will follow the colloquium, all are welcome!
