In this series on Homer’s Iliad, we will explore how artists have interpreted this extraordinary poem; its charmed life in the midst of battle and a god’s eye view of the action, the city, the plain, the fields and mountains. The Greek ships at anchor, and the cast of thousands in the legendary city of Troy.

Agamemnon is a lion hunting deer. Hector starts killing Greeks. Diomedes is shot in the foot. Odysseus is surrounded and Menelaus rescues him while Ajax holds the Trojans at bay single-handed. Patroclus is urged to put Achilles’s armour on. The Trojans attack the Greek wall and Hector smashes through the gates. Poseidon comes to the rescue.
