Four fragmentary manuscripts from 13-century BC Syria describe, step-by-step, the ritual to install a high priestess of the local Storm-god of the town of Emar. Only discovered in the 1970s, they shed new light on the NIN.DINGIR, “lady of the god,” long-attested from as early as the 3rd millennium BC. Tonight’s speaker has worked on the texts for several years, and tonight re-lives the eleven- day ceremony, enlightening us on this ancient priestesshood. Soraia is a PhD candidate at University College London who also works as an academic translator.
