On 1 January 2005 the Freedom of Information Act came into full effect in the UK. The Freedom of Information Act provides public access to information held by public authorities. Public authorities are obliged to publish certain information about their activities; and members of the public are entitled to request information from public authorities.
Together with the launch of a new book “10 years of FOI: freedom fighting or lazy journalism?” edited by City University journalism academic Tom Felle, and former BBC producer John Mair, a panel of experts will discuss if the legislation has freed up reporters to conduct campaigning investigations in the public interest, or is it just an excuse for lazy journalism?
