This lively talk will whisk you through 35 years of how art has responded to rapid changes in gay rights, and the treatment and stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS. Artist and curator John Walter explores the work of artists including David Wojnarowicz, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Keith Haring, Elmgreen & Dragset, the more recent work of Prem Sahib, and others.
John Walter will be looking at how different aesthetic approaches such as activism and even clinical and urban practices such as cruising have responded to the subject. He will set them against his recent large-scale installation project Alien Sex Club and his own approach which employs humour, colour and hospitality to generate new avenues of discussion and debate.
