A public lecture by Prof. Jean-Pascal van Ypersele of the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium and IPCC Vice-Chair.
After 27 years, five Assessment Reports, and a few storms, can the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) still be policy-relevant? Is the massive effort by thousands of international scientists still worth it when, for some, “science has spoken” and, for others, climate negotiations spend weeks discussing agreements which, up to now, have not prevented much warming? Prof. Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (on Twitter: @JPvanYpersele), IPCC Vice-Chair and candidate Chair for the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, and who has been closely associated with the IPCC since 1995, will explain how he sees the future of the IPCC.
Dr Arthur Petersen, Professor of Science, Technology and Public Policy at University College London, will offer a response.
This event is presented by the Department of Geography and the Policy Institute at King’s.
