Who is in controlWhat has the greatest influence over our choices? Are we ruled by society, genetics, or our brains? Is the choice that we have merely an illusion?

You are invited to a special Question Time style debate to hear a panel of experts that include a psychologist, lawyer, linguist, and computer scientist discuss what influences our choices, and whether or not we do ultimately have control over our lives.

Taking place at Queen Mary University of London, the panel will take questions from the audience and there will be an interactive mobile phone poll, so that people can vote during the debate on how effective the arguments are FOR and AGAINST the claim that humans have control.

Hosted by Dr Magda Osman, Experimental Psychologist at Queen Mary’s School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, the debate launches her new book Future-minded: The psychology of agency and control in which she discusses coincidences and other psychological phenomena such as the unconscious.

The free event is part of Queen Mary’s new Centre for Mind and Society and the Biological and Experimental Psychology research division, part of the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences.
