What sort of news will we be reading and talking about in the Britain of the future?
There is no doubt that Hackgate, Leveson and new technology are revolutionising the British media. But so far debate about the future of the press has tended to focus on how news is reported and consumed rather on the kind of stories we’ll be reading.
How will journalists excite, enrage and influence us in 2020? What stories will interest us? Will it all be celebrity-based listicles and clickbait? Will there still be be market for longform, serious content?
Do We Get The Press We Deserve is the 8th in 37 Things You Need To Know About Modern Britain series of talks curated by Bug for the House of St Barnabas.
Miranda Sawyer will chair the debate with Sophie Heawood (Guardian Weekend), Matt Kelly (former publisher and director of content at Mirror Group Digital and now Digital Director, Local World Media) and Douglas McCabe (media analyst and Enders Analysis). With audience debate, the evening will seek to answer the, ahem, pressing question: will we get the press we deserve, and if not, will it be better – or worse?
